The Purpose of the Steinhoff/BZS Scholarship is to provide a scholarship for applicants in the final 2 years of study for a Bachelor, Master Degree, or Doctorate in the Environmental Sciences with an accredited institution.  The scholarship will be awarded primarily on candidate interest and commitment in protecting the environment together with financial need and secondarily on academic achievement.

Description

The Steinhoff/BZS Scholarship is yet another way BZS hopes to encourage and support young generations of Bermudians to become stewards of our natural environment. It is the generous gift of Robert Steinhoff, former president of BZS, whose contribution to BZS education, conservation and research programmes is deeply appreciated.

The Steinhoff/BZS Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the final two years of study in a Bachelor', Masters, or Doctorate degree at an accredited institution in the area of Environmental Sciences.  The scholarship will be awarded primarily on candidate interes and commitment to protecting the environment, together with financial need and academic achievement.

Other Requirements

  • Eligible students must have completed the first year of a three-year Bachelor’s degree, or the second year of a four-year undergraduate first degree with a major in a related field at an accredited overseas university. Students entering or studying in a Master’s or Doctorate degree programme will also be considered
  • Students must be in good academic standing and have current original academic transcripts submitted for consideration
  • Students must be Bermudian or have applied for and be eligible for Bermuda status (a letter must be produced from Bermuda Immigration Department)
  • Students must submit a completed application form, with at least two accompanying references (one reference must be in the field of environmental science)
  • Students must submit a financial statement outlining annual academic expenses, sources of income, including awards, academic fees, and university living expenses
  • Students must submit an essay of no less than 500 words outlining their reasons for choosing to study Environmental Sciences. Applicants should also clearly state their career goals
  • Students must submit a medical certificate
  • Applications must be received by the Scholarship Secretary at BZS no later than April 30 each year
  • online application forms may be submitted, but a hard copy of the form with the applicant’s signature, plus all other required documents, must also be submitted by the annual deadline
  • Applicants will be interviewed in person in May of each year
  • short-listed overseas students who cannot be available may be interviewed by phone
  • Successful applicants may hold scholarships or grants from other institutions provided the total amount awarded does not exceed the annual cost of overseas study
  • Consideration will be given to related work and volunteer experience, including volunteer service at BAMZ in the BZS Junior Volunteer Programme, etc.
  • In addition to candidate interest, financial need and commitment to protecting the environment, the Scholarship Committee will consider academic achievement
  • The Scholarship Committee will review continued payment of the scholarship annually following the submission of transcripts and interviews where possible
  • Scholarship awardees will be encouraged to accept practical internship opportunities during vacation periods at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum &
  • Zoo (BAMZ), or other conservation and science institutions either in Bermuda or overseas
  • Scholarship awardees will be encouraged to return to Bermuda following completion of studies and related work experience overseas
